Star Jason Biggs hosts the Netflix baking show
You might be wondering, “How did ‘American Pie’ star Jason Biggs land a TV job on ‘Blue Ribbon Baking Championship?’ on Netflix?”
The answer would be clear. Biggs is the star of the 1999 comedy “American Pie,” whose apple pie mishap spawned a franchise that spanned four major motion pictures. A smiling Biggs is shown holding a pie in scenes from “American Pie 2” (2001), “American Wedding” (2003) and “American Reunion” (2012).
Biggs, 46, is like pies, even if the New Jerseyian grew up far from the state festivities celebrated on the Netflix baking competition.
“The New Jersey State Fair takes place in the Giants Stadium parking lot. When people picture a state fair, New Jersey is not what they picture,” Biggs tells USA TODAY. “Jersey Shoes was my country fair growing up.”
The “food guy” with a strong recipe for banana bread is creating his own presentation of the host, appearing in the series “Dinner and a Movie” of TBS with the actress Jenny Mollen, his wife since 2008.

“I really wanted to embrace something in the food world,” says Biggs. “Basically, there’s a wink on camera and the audience has me as the host of the baking show. And whenever I can’t think of what to say, I always there’s a pie joke in my back pocket that brings the house down.”
Here are some important questions answered about Biggs’ role in Netflix’s “Blue Ribbon Baking Championship” (now streaming).
Does Jason Biggs have a judge’s vote on Netflix’s ‘Blue Ribbon Baking Championship’?
Country-inspired delicacies are more than just “Baking Championship” pies. Ten national winners from across the country compete for a $100,000 prize and the biggest “Best In Fair” blue ribbon.
Biggs is charming and gentle as a contestant on “Baking Championship”, showing off skills such as juggling and catching food thrown into his mouth. But the “American Pie” star didn’t have a vote along with the show’s blue-ribbon judges — co-host and lifestyle expert Sandra Lee, former White House chef Bill Yosses, and master baker Bryan Ford.
During the determination of the Judge’s Choice ribbon in each category, Biggs examines each inspired creation for justice and measures it on camera. He says: “But I don’t really judge.
Biggs was not allowed to participate in the heavy second round of judging in each event, but he was still involved in the good work of the country.
“I had to try everything, so at least I knew what was going on,” says Biggs. “After the judges did their thing, I went back to try everything.”
How long is ‘Baking Championship’ before ‘American Pie’ comedy?
It’s been 25 years since “American Pie” hit US theaters with Biggs’ young Jim trying his mother’s warm apple pie. It’s not long before the pie jokes start in “Baking Championship,” which features Biggs’ voice in the show’s introduction. Wait for it…
“Take it from someone who knows,” Biggs says as the berry-filled slice is sweet and warm. “That is a very attractive pie.”
Biggs clarifies that the baking contest only includes “American Pie” jokes and references, with no reenactments.
“No pies were injured in the making of this show,” he says. “It’s safe for family viewing.”
What kind of creations are featured in the ‘Baking Championship’?
Ephisouto has a nice national twist with a fried food section (with a “decadent and delicious” Oreo fried cookie) and a dessert-on-a-stick section. There are pies and unusual country desserts such as strawberry shortcake still available at Biggs.
“That strawberry shortcake reminded me of me,” Biggs said.
How does Jason Biggs feel about ‘American Pie’ at 25?
Biggs posted a celebratory Instagram post on July 9, the 25th anniversary of the release of “American Pie.” The one-time actor gained instant fame with the release of the hit comedy, and young Jennifer Lopez went to the premiere of the film.
“I had to fly the first night on a red eye so I could go to New York to do ‘Letterman’ the next day. It was just surreal and wild,” says Biggs. “On the Friday night of the release, the cast and crew went to see the audience’s reaction in sold-out theaters. I remember being amazed at how everyone responded.”
The morning after the release, Biggs and his roommate were crossing a street in Los Angeles when a car screeched to a halt.
“The driver rolled down his window and said, ‘Oh my God! You’re the guy from ‘American Pie’, do a dance!'” says Biggs. “It was wild.”
Ironically, it was years into his relationship with Mollen before his wife actually watched “American Pie.”
“We kind of flipped through the channels and stopped and watched,” says Biggs, who says his wife was laughing. “I just remember him talking about how young I looked. But I think I didn’t scare him.”
Humor had an impact.
Biggs, a father of two boys, adds: “My life is very much defined by several different defining factors. “There is marriage, and there are children. But the most obvious about the madness was Life Before ‘American Pie’ and Life After ‘American Pie'”
